Academic Overview

HOPAC follows the British Curriculum in all parts of the school, but uses the American convention for naming classes, so students are in classes from Kindergarten to Grade 12. This is the British Curriculum equivalent of Year One to Year 13.

The school is in three parts: Primary (Kindergarten to Grade 5), Middle (Grade 6 to Grade 8) and Senior (Grade 9 to Grade 12).

The National Curriculum for England and Wales is followed in all parts of the school, but we modify it to reflect our very international flavour. The British Curriculum is taught in over 150 countries around the world and opens up the door to most higher education establishments. The Curriculum encourages students to think for themselves, solve problems and begin to develop critical thinking skills.

Primary

The British National Curriculum has a very clear framework that allows teachers to carefully monitor pupils’ achievements.   We track the development of each child against age appropriate performance standards and try to ensure that every child achieves their potential, paying particular attention to their progress in the core areas of reading, writing and mathematics.

Middle

Our Middle School students build on the foundation laid in Primary and move on to a more challenging curriculum.  The core subjects of English, mathematics and science are prioritized and students have the opportunity to study Geography, History, ICT, French, Kiswahili, Art, Music and Drama.

All students benefit from attending a Bible class and become actively involved in Community Service through our Service Learning programme.

Senior

During the course of Grade 9 and Grade 10, students complete their IGCSE examinations.  Students typically study 10 IGCSEs over this two year period, which includes a mixture of compulsory and optional subjects.
